Warton appeared on the census of 6 April 1930 at 429 Lincoln St, Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.3 Paul Howard Ross died on 9 April 1949 at Rural Coventry / Portage Lakes, Summit County, Ohio, at age 49.1,4 Mystery In Death Cause of Paul Ross

Paul Ross, for whom funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the McIntire funeral home, died under mysterious circumstances in the Portage Lakes area at Akron. Before going to Akron Ross lived at 429 Lincoln st. in Wooster. The Beacon Journal of Monday had the following:

Coroner C. I. Martin has delayed his official verdict in the death of Paul Ross, 49, of 650 Fruit dr., in the Portage Lakes area.

Ross' body was found at 11:05 a.m. Sunday lying face down, on the lake shore about 10 feet from Heim's channel, an inlet of Long Lake.

"There are aspects of the case which puzzle us," said the coroner. He said he would re-examine the body this afternoon and also ask the sheriff's office "for some additional details."

The coroner said definitely that Ross' death was not due to drowning. He added that "possibly" the man died of exhaustion and exposure.

ROSS' ROWBOAT, equipped with an outboard motor, was found capsized in the channel, but tied to the bank.

There were signs that Ross had crawled laboriously from the muck channel, about three feet deep, to the spot where he was found. The clothing on the lower part of his body was wet.

Near the body was found an empty pack for cigarettes. A neighbor told Deputy Sherman Gandee, investigating the case, that the pack was not the brand smoked by Ross.

Deputies, too, could find no signs that Ross had paused in his struggle to tie up his boat.

THE DEPUTIES found $37 on Ross' body.

Gandee and others established that Ross was last seen around 6:30 pm. Friday. Oliver Stanley, of 583 Apple dr., told of seeing Ross alone in his boat on the lake at that time.

Ross' family did not report him missing because, Mrs. Ross told deputies, her husband often fished all night.

Born near Millersburg, Ross had worked for various companies in Wooster before he moved here about three years ago. He was employed by the Utilities Construction Co., of Akron.5 He was buried on 20 April 1949 at Wooster Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.4,1
